The Emanuel Nine: Despair and the Power of the Sublime

In the October issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, Suzy Hart writes a touching article delving into the creation of the Emanuel Nine portraits that commemorate the nine individuals who were murdered in the church shooting in Charleston, SC on June 17, 2015. Lauren Tilden conceived of the idea and coordinated with Principle Gallery to select nine artists to paint portraits of Myra Thomson, Tywanza Sanders, Susie Jackson, Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Rev. Dr. Daniel Simmons, Sr., Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, Ethel Lee Lance, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Cynthia Graham Hurd.
Artists Terry Stickland, Lauren Tilden, Gregory Mortenson, Judy Takacs, Catherine Prescott, Paul McCormack, Mario Andres Robinson, Ricky Mujica, and I participated in this project. I am grateful I had the opportunity to paint Myra Thompson’s portrait and could give something back to her family to keep her in their thoughts. Last year, Principle Gallery held a private reception for the families of the victims and the artists. It was a spirited gathering that will stay in my memories for years to come. I had the honor of meeting Myra’s husband, daughter, and siblings. Myra is missed tremendously by all who knew her.
