Daily Sketch – and a look back

Tonight’s attempt was a complete disappointment! I started sketching a small still life of two glass bottles, when I realized that they lend themselves better to paint. Since I am a tonal painter, my sketch grew increasingly dark as I added shadows. If I didn’t stop myself the drawing would have been entirely black in no time. Unfortunately, this drawing was not fit for the public eye, so I started a new one. Initially, I was excited to draw my hand – a good old standby. My enthusiasm lasted for a little while until the sketch started to go downhill.

I am posting tonight’s sketches and an old page in my journal from several years ago (before my skills atrophied).

I think the new hand sketch looks perfectly fine!

Oh, Stephanie, so Perfection oriented! Once you are practicing/working/just doing it regularly, all the old skills will come back, and you’ll be amazed at what the time away has brought to your work, too. Just keep going! Also, I like the look of the new hand sketch and have to admit loving the idea of it turning to black from the layers and layers you were adding — maybe that’s the poet in me. I hope you can just go with the joy of it all soon. :0)
