Stephanie Deshpande will lead a 3-day workshop focused on painting a floral still life in oil.
The workshop begins with an afternoon at the Legion of Honor (TBA), where we will study selected paintings in the collection and explore how the masters approached light, form, and color. Students will have the option to sketch in a journal, using these examples to begin thinking about floral structure and form. We will discuss techniques, compositional strategies, and paint handling as we examine the paintings together, providing inspiration for your studio work.
At BACAA, participants will develop their floral painting from initial composition to a more resolved finish. Instruction will cover composition, comparative measurement, values, edges, and color relationships, with demonstrations and guidance throughout. Stephanie’s hybrid painting approach—combining both direct and indirect methods—will be demonstrated step by step. Glazing techniques will also be discussed as a way to enhance depth and luminosity in the work.
Whether you are new to oil painting or an experienced painter, this workshop offers the opportunity to refine your approach to painting flowers as well as your oil painting technique.
